MMc401.2 – Graphic Design and Illustration

Designing a brand?

The assignment is to create my own unique brand through the career of my choice – which will be Photography.
The design I create will be used on, portfolio pages, business cards, and my website portfolio.

Design Principles

Balance
·  Balance is arranging elements so that no one part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part. The three different kinds of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. Symmetrical (or formal) balance is the most stable, in a visual sense

Emphasis
·  Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point. Subordination is defined as minimizing or toning down other compositional elements in order to bring attention to the focal point.

Contrast
·  Contrast is the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.

Here are a few of my own designs on Illustrator which represent balance, emphasis, and contrast.

Artists

Malika Favre

·  Malika Favre is a French illustrator based in London. Her approach to illustration is about paring things down as much as possible as she tries to get the essence of her subject by using as few lines and colours as it needs to convey the core of her ideas.

Her work is very limited in the way she uses colour and shape, yet it is so effective; it is perfectly balanced and the geometric shapes flow nicely together to create her illustrative images.

Her work ‘Kamasutra’ – which interestingly shapes out the alphabet – shows perfect balance and symmetry, and the vivid colours add emphasis to the two figures of the man and woman within the centre.

My favourite work of hers are the simplistic images of ladies faces, as I want to go along the lines of designing something with a simplistic style face and play around with the background colour and the foreground colour to see if I can mimic her style of work in some way, shape or form.

My designs

I decided to do a slightly abstract styles of work, and to interpret both Favre and Bar’s work into my design.
For instance, the ladies faces in Favre’s work really stood out to me, so I have included my face and hair style onto my design and shall add slight notes of red in certain areas to add emphasis with colour.

Noma bar’’s was quite difficult to do, as I decided – as I’m a photographer – I wanted to create a lens as an eye, but in the end, it appears to look more like glasses, than an eye. Either way I’m happy with the result and shall stick with it.

I first put the colour red on the lips, but then decided to change it back to black, as I believed it took away the emphasis from the lens and that overall is what I want people’s eyes to be guided to first.

The red within the lens adds the emphasis on that part very well, and upon asking a few people on their opinion, they agreed that it did too.
